December 10--19

“Julia May Jonas's company Nellie Tinder stages scenes in For Artists Only that have a sort of filmic quality. Or perhaps more accurately, they invoke a perspective of watching people interact through a window... It's a wonderfully unique device that arouses our voyeuristic impulses...And when things got bloody, I was looking for my binoculars.

Nellie Tinder’s For Artists Only is a subversive 21st century comedy of manners following three young female artists spending the summer doing battle at a New England country home. Nellie Tinder’s staging creates a tightly choreographed, hyper-stylized world that skillfully evokes the frustration of young women who desire to make their mark on their world but don’t know quite how to go about it. It’s an examination of the decision to become an artist, and what it means to turn the creative impulse into a personal manifesto while at the same time trying to be nice to the people around you.
Nellie Tinder has attempted the creation of instructive and appropriate art since 2005, presenting dance-theater, solo shows and original plays at venues including Galapagos Arts Space, BRIC, BAX, University Settlement, The Bushwick Starr, HERE Arts Center, Tonic, La Mama E.T.C. and P.S. 122. NT regularly appears at the Catch! Series, curated by Andrew Dinwiddie and Jeff Larson. Nellie Tinder's aesthetic devotes itself to organic artistic innovation and the creation of original work. Past creations include Take Heart, the tragic tale of a child liar and her inevitable downfall, (TerraNova Collective/PS122) The Penitent Hours, a dance play about family history, abortion and madrigals, (Bushwick Starr) New Trends (Nellie Thinks About Motivation), a bossa nova trio about Stoic Philosophy (University Settlement), and I Don’t Want to Be Remembered As a Chair (Nellie Thinks About Religion), a tenderly humorous look at the last of the surviving Shakers (Galapagos Arts Space).
