--The New York Times

The Theater of a Two-Headed Calf explores the quiet but transgressive unfolding of Trifles, the 1916 proto-feminist one-act by Susan Glaspell. Exploring the real-life murder case that Glaspell covered extensively as a reporter, wherein a man was killed by his wife, Trifles is ultimately concerned with the changing female role in a society that was not wholly ready to accept it. The play might literally be about the murder, but much more is at stake—Trifles is a groundbreaking work that demanded a recognition of the powerlessness of females of the time, and made way for a realization of a more subtle, sophisticated power, even in the face of law triumphing over justice.

The Obie award-winning The Theatre of a Two-Headed Calf was founded in 1999 by director Brooke O’Harra  and composer Brendan Connelly in New Orleans, Louisiana. Since 2001, they have been a resident company at La MaMa, E.T.C. where they created Tumor Brainiowicz, The Mother (both plays by S.I. Witkiewicz), The Life and Death of Tom Thumb the Great and Major Barbara, which received a NYIT Award for Best Original Score in 2006. In 2007, they developed and presented (along with the HERE Arts Center) Drum of the Waves of Horikawa, for which company member Heidi Schreck reiceved an Obie Award. Their work has also been produced at P.S. 122, chashama, Soho Rep and The Perishable Theater in Providence. In 2008, the Dyke Division of Two-Headed Calf was formed, dedicated to the ongoing lesbian soap opera, Room for Cream, written and performed by Two-Headed Calf company members plus an ever-expanding cast of performance artists, comedians, non-actors and video artists.
